Men’s Group Therapy: What is it?
All of us belong to a group of some kind or another. Whether it be with school pals, family, religious organizations, close knit circle of friends, book club, Rotary, or work relationships to name a few. These relationships are based on a common criteria which hold the group together.
Men’s group therapy is much the same in that as many as eight men come together each week to work on their personal issues, whatever they may be. Dr. Stephen Johnson holds a sacred, confident and secure space for these men to discuss their issues and to get them out in the open so that each individual can ‘hear’ his own voice as he brings his concerns to light. That’s where the work begins. The men’s group process supports the mission of “Bringing good men together and bringing out the best in them.”
Some men stay in group for years, while others may stay for months. Space is limited, but friendship and support expands over time.

I facilitate three men’s groups that meet online and periodically in-office. They are established to assist moderate to high functioning members via a mindfulness based therapeutic support approach that is psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral-in-nature. We deal with all issues pertinent to men’s ability to live a successful and productive life. The Tuesday evening group includes men who are in the 35-60 age range. The interactive focus is on self-regulation, impulse control and management of mood states emphasizing positive communication and improved social interaction creating more harmonious relationships.
The Wednesday group is for men who are in the 60-80 age range. An interactive psychodynamic approach dealing with all issues pertinent to men’s ability to overcome personal challenges while aspiring to live a highly functional and productive life. This group format supports successful relationship dynamics and interpersonal communication pertaining to a focus on health, vitality and the aging process. The goal is personal empowerment to achieve higher levels of functioning while incorporating the wisdom gained through living life to the fullest.
The Thursday morning support group for men in the 60-80 age range who are retired or still working. This group is psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral-in-nature dealing with all issues pertinent to men’s ability to live a successful and productive life. This is an empowerment group focusing on personal excellence, self-actualization and the ability to participate in life to the fullest at the top of one’s game.
